We do not have real costs for campaigns on social media

Preliminary financial reports on campaign expenses of candidates in the second round of presidential elections in Croatia again do not reflect the real costs of advertising on social networks. The reports show the same problems with social media advertising as the reports before the first round - costs for social media campaigns are either still […]

Gong recommendations for improving elections and referendums

In the current year we have once again been witnesses to the political irresponsibility of the government to start a reform of the electoral and referendum legislation. In the upcoming year we will be faced with the unadjusted electoral units, incomplete regulation of referendums and paper voting. In October 2019 the ninth assembly of the […]

Report campaign costs on social media separately!

Preliminary reports published before the first round of presidential elections present a step forward towards a more complete picture of election campaigns on the networks, but there is still much room for improvement. In the 2019 presidential election, the new Rulebook on Financial Reporting of Political Activities applies for the first time, according to which […]

Letter to GRECO: Plenkovic undermines the fight against corruption

Gong has warned Greco (The Group of States against in the Council of Europe) that Prime Minister Plenković is systematically undermining anti-corruption activities in Croatia. We informed of two recent cases: related to the (1) Commission Regulating Conflict of Interest and (2) Gong as a civil society watchdog. Dear Greco, the rhetoric which Prime Minister […]

Questions for Dubravka Šuica that she needs to answer

Before Dubravka Šuica takes over the duty as a vice-president of European Commission and becomes commissioner for demography and democracy, Gong finds crucial that she comes forward about the content of her mandate. During hearings of candidates for EU Commissioners Ms Šuica should be asked these questions: Democracy, equality, and the rule of law How […]

However, some shortcomings were noticed so Gong issued recommendations for the next election with the goal of improving the legal framework for conducting the election and improving the operations of responsible authorities. […]

We have to get the exact costs for Facebook campaigns

The data from the SEC financial reports and the social media reports for the European Parliament election show that the amount spent, which Gong warned about even before the election, is not possible to precisely define and it is necessary to more clearly regulate political advertising on social media and digital platforms The New Rulebook […]

Mind to mind, hand in hand, EU citizens can catalyze change

According to a new democratic right, established in 2015, any EU citizen, together with commonly concerned neighbors, can launch an initiative to be brought before the European Commission. Any EU citizen has a mechanism at their disposal, through which EU policy and legislation could be influenced according to their concerns. The European Citizens’ Initiative is […]

Some political parties not respecting silence

According to non-anonymous reports to Gong, the election morning went by peacefully with few reports about irregularities. The majority of reports were related to violations of election silence on social media, where specific political parties and candidates are posting paid ads (Živi zid, HSP). Additionally, SMS and messages on social media (SDP, IDS, Narodna stranka-reformisti) […]

Ads are not labeled as political, and some don't even appear

The election campaign for the European Parliament in 2019 was the first election campaign in which we have had a somewhat better insight into a political advertisement on social media, especially on Facebook. In accordance to the promise of increasing transparency in advertising which Facebook has given to the European Union, the campaign has provided […]

Citizenship education still without any improvement

A new intersubject programme of citizenship education does not bring any improvements. Civil society has been replaced by community, nationalism has been inserted in places where it does not even fit the context and with everything we are seeing, the young are still being raised to be subjects, not citizens. The decision on adopting the […]
